Javier Perea

Operating Partner and member of the Advisory Board

Javier Perea

Javier Perea joined Nazca’s IAB in January 2017 as an expert in digital transformation. Technology now plays a key role across all areas of companies, and Javier is responsible for identifying potential technological levers or areas for improvement in investment opportunities.

What is your background?

I have more than 30 years of experience in technological innovation, both as an entrepreneur and as an executive in multinational information technology companies. After graduating in Business Administration in Madrid in 1990, I founded the first cybersecurity company in Spain, and after eight years of growth we merged with McAfee, the global leader in the field. From there, I developed my international career at McAfee and Intel as European Vice President of Inter Security. I am currently an investor and advisor in high-growth tech start-ups, as well as CEO and founder of Smart Protection.

What aspect of Nazca makes you most proud?

The combination of the highest level of professionalism with the human quality of the team, and how this is reflected in the portfolio companies.

What motivates you the most when working with a management team?

Understanding—and helping the management team understand—how technology can positively transform their business operations, and being able to implement and see tangible results from those changes.

What challenges should entrepreneurs consider when thinking about bringing in a private equity fund?

I’ve had the opportunity to experience this situation both as an investee and as an investor. In short, I would say the main challenge is finding the right combination between the chemistry with the investment team—particularly with the board member who joins the project—and the value the fund brings to the company in areas of improvement and growth. The third factor would be valuation, but in my opinion, it’s not the most important of the three.

What do you like most about your work?

Learning about and analyzing different sectors, understanding new business models, and engaging with founders or current executives to see how we can help them improve their business through technology.

How do you spend your time outside of work?

I enjoy spending weekends with my family and friends, I practice running and paddle tennis, and I never stop reading and learning new things related to technology.
